Background

Gerold graduated from the University of Heidelberg in 1996 (First State Law Examination) and completed his legal clerkship in 1998 (Second State Law Examination). Somewhat later he was admitted to the bar in Frankfurt/Main and worked a few years for multinational law firms with a focus on corporate law. In 2003, he received his doctorate in law (Dr. iur.) from the University of Mainz and then joined the civil service, where he held various positions from 2003 to 2017. In 2017, he was appointed Professor of Public Law at the Faculty of Law in Kehl.

His most recent publications focus on the impact of digitalization on the public sector. Current research focuses on the legal implications of emerging technologies, in particular artificial intelligence (AI) and distributed ledger technology (DLT).
